North of the city, Andergrove is an established family suburb, and further out Bucasia is a beachside community that grew from a holiday spot. Work here ranges from family car batteries and caravan wiring to salt corrosion and boat trailers.

Suburbs in Northern Beaches

Andergrove is home to nearly 10,000 people, mostly in low-set brick houses, and has grown steadily since the 1990s, with three schools and a steady stream of commuters heading into Mackay. Bucasia, about 15 km north of the CBD, faces a sheltered north-facing beach and still has cane, fruit farms and swampy creek land behind it. The Mackay-Bucasia Road is the only access road for the Northern Beaches, so most cars here do the same busy commute every day, and the closer you get to the sea the more salt shows up in the work.

Common auto electrical jobs in Northern Beaches

Commuting, family trips and the sea set the pattern of auto electrical work across Mackay's northern suburbs.

Salt air on the coast

Homes close to the beach at Bucasia get a constant light dusting of salt on everything parked outside. It settles on battery terminals, earth points and exposed connectors, and over a few years it eats into them. Flickering lights, slow cranking and odd warning lights are often the first signs. Washing the underside of the car, cleaning terminals and sealing connectors with grease all help. Our guide how to clean corroded battery terminals covers the basics.

Caravans and camper trailers

Plenty of Northern Beaches families own a caravan or camper trailer, and the school holidays send many of them up the Bruce Highway or inland. Common jobs include fitting 12-pin plugs, wiring brake controllers and sorting out van batteries that don't charge while towing. Before a big trip, check the plug, lights and brakes in the driveway. Our guide do I need a towbar wiring harness explains the options for newer vehicles.

Batteries on a daily commute

The Mackay-Bucasia Road gets congested at peak times, and many Northern Beaches drivers spend their commute in slow traffic with the air conditioning running. That load, combined with Mackay's heat, wears batteries faster than you might expect. A battery that cranks slowly on a cooler morning is often close to failing. Having it tested at each service lets you replace it on your terms. See car battery types explained before choosing a replacement.
