Central Mackay takes in the CBD on the south bank of the Pioneer River, the older streets of West Mackay and the busy residential spread of North Mackay. Work here ranges from city car batteries and hospital car park call-outs to flood checks, boat trailers and tradie utes.

Suburbs in Mackay City

The Pioneer River splits central Mackay in two. South of it, the CBD is a compact grid of shops and offices, and West Mackay is flat, older housing around the Base Hospital and the Botanic Gardens. The Forgan Bridge, rebuilt in 2011 and carrying about 30,000 vehicles a day, links them to North Mackay, a large residential suburb with pockets of light industry and the main road to the harbour. Much of this land is low and flat, so wet season downpours and river floods matter as much here as the heat does.

Common auto electrical jobs in Mackay City

Heat, humidity and a low-lying river city shape most of the auto electrical work in central Mackay.

Batteries worn out by the heat

Mackay sits in the humid tropics, and a car parked in the sun on a summer afternoon cooks its battery from the inside. Heat speeds up the wear on the plates, so batteries here often fail earlier than the label suggests, and they usually fail without much warning. A load test at each service tells you whether yours is close to the end before it strands you in a shopping centre car park. Our guide on how to test a car battery explains the readings.

Water in the wiring after a flood

The Pioneer River has reached major flood level about twenty times since records began, and in February 2008 around 600 mm of rain fell on Mackay in six hours. Cars caught in floodwater, or parked in a flooded yard, can run fine for a while and then develop odd faults as water and silt corrode plugs, earth points and modules. If your car has been in water, have the wiring checked before relying on it, and never start an engine that may have water in it.

Air conditioning that works hard all summer

From late spring through the wet season, the air conditioning in a Mackay car rarely gets a rest. When it starts blowing warm, the cause is often electrical: a condenser fan that has stopped, a sticking relay, a blown fuse or a faulty pressure switch. Those parts are cheap compared with a compressor, so they are worth checking first. Regassing and any other work on the refrigerant side needs a licensed technician.

Boat trailers heading for the harbour

Plenty of central Mackay households own a boat, and Harbour Road takes them through North Mackay to the boat ramps at Mackay Harbour. Trailers that are backed into salt water every weekend suffer badly: globes rust in their sockets, earth wires corrode and the plug pins go green. LED lights sealed against water last far longer than old globe lamps. If your lights flicker or work one side only, our guide why aren't my trailer lights working walks through the usual faults.
